The Stage 1 version of the Mini Cooper is fitted with an S Works conversion kit from John Cooper Garages - a kit still available today. The 1275cc A+ engine gains another 27bhp as a result of this conversion.

Alongside the increased power and torque provided by the conversion, the 4-speed gearbox - designed with fuel economy in mind - is exchanged for a 5-speed transmission from Jack Knight, with gearing far more suited to track driving.
